THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING

THE RATIONALIST CHARM OF PALAZZO OBERDAN

The history of Palazzo RAS, located in Piazza Oberdan in the very centre of Trieste, dates back to January 1934, when Arnoldo Frigessi di Rattalma, then president of RAS, acquired the building site.

In the same year, the Technical Office of the Municipality of Trieste granted “permission to construct a building for residential use”, approving the design submitted by Umberto Nordio. Work began in early 1935 and was completed in March 1936.

A Step Back in Time, a Home in the Present

The building is characterised by the balance and linearity of its form, in keeping with the principles of Rationalist architecture of the period, and by the use of refined materials, such as Orsera stone, which forms the high plinth supporting the portico.
The property is enriched by remarkable decorative features, beginning with the entrance hall, where marble surfaces alternate with frescoes by Achille Funi and mosaics by Felicita Frai and Graziano Grapputo.

The winged lion by the sculptor Ugo Carrà, originally positioned at the top of the main façade, pays tribute to the RAS company.
